The most noticeable feature of the completed structure are the wind turbines on the southwest corner of the building. You can see those below.

The new garage also features the following:
- Natural ventilation
- Low-E glass to further reduce energy demand
- A green roof to combat heat
- A bike storage room for 2 dozen bikes
- Six plug-in stations for electric vehicles

I snapped a few construction photos while on my way to lunch from Marina City.
In the photo below, you will notice the pre-fabricated structure being delivered. Unlike an office tower, this parking garage is constructed in pre-fab sections that are delivered by truck and put into place by crane.
Below is a pre-fab piece being lifted.
I wondered what was going up there; I thought it was another high rise.
ReplyDeleteDid you see that the columns supporting the new Mesirow building are mostly hollow? I noticed it the other day while out of my balcony (the new tower is blocking what was previously an open northwest view from my unit).
Amazes me how little it takes to support such a structure...
I don't know too much about the construction of 353 N Clark, but the majority of the building loads are on the thick concrete core. Very similar physics to Marina City, where 70% of the building load is handled by the circular core. 353 N Clark is a classic curtain-wall construction. It is pretty amazing!
