Over the last week I bumped into two of the great contractors that work in Marina City. Joe Karner of KNK Renovations (708 819 8978) and Mario Gaddula or VMG Construction (708 351 7751). If you are considering upgrading your home at Marina Towers, you should talk to these guys. They are really an asset to the building.
When I show listings in the building, I like to take the prospects through the completely renovated condos. The rehabbed homes are such a wonderful transformation.

A kitchen -- and open floor plan -- I would kill for.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice what can be done to the MC units since none of the walls are load-bearing.
ReplyDeleteIt was a real pleasure to see a totally remodled Marina City unit last year, and when I uploaded the photograph to my flickr photo sharing site, a number of visitors to that page remarked at how spacious and comfortable the environment looked, offering privacy and yet an open, uncluttered appearance. I also snapped several images of a unit that for all practical purposes hadn't been touched by the original tenant in many, many years. The original appliances were still there, and most interesting were the heat and air conditioning controls that dated back to original installation. What a contrast of eras and the furnishings that go along with them. Marina City is truly a place that is adapatable, practical, and beautiful. I love visiting the towers. There's always something new going on or in, and of course the nostalgia element for me personally is nothing short of remarkable.
ReplyDeleteI live in one of those original units. Still have the black tile floors, the brown metal cabinets (and stove, which isn't very accurate), the small tiles in the bathroom, the old heating and a/c controls (which aren't very accurate either), electrical wiring that panics when I turn on my computer.
ReplyDeleteDesperately needs updating, but it's rented, so that's not happening anytime soon...
